Living in America: a Guide for the Perplexed Chapter 25
What will our union look like when we have perfected it? How many must look at life behind bars, how many must look at life behind the barrel of a gun, how many must look at life through a thousand thousand windshields and windows and power lines? Is this what we set out to achieve? Did we understand the thing we were creating? What would Thomas Jefferson think? What would Ben Franklin think? What would Jesus think? Do we act as a people, do we recognize a truth to be self evident? Are we exercising the collective agency of our will? No nation has developed faster and historically no nation has avoided ultimate collapse. Are we planning on being the exception to this apparent rule? Are you a happy cow? People make all sorts of generalizations about America, they say it's this and they say it's that. The sages remains, seeing nothing but another curve, another river, another ocean. And the rest of us, we just get by.
